1. Place a fraud alert.
If you haven’t yet placed a fraud alert you should do so immediately. Failing to do so will just put you more at risk. For cases where an identity theft has already taken place, an extended fraud alert is used. With this type of fraud alert, transactions will only be allowed on your account after you have been personally identified. The initial fraud alert is a different kind. You can choose to do this type of alert if you suspect that you might soon be a victim of identity theft. For instance if your wallet gets stolen and you strongly suspect that your credit cards are going to be used, you can have an initial fraud alert placed before the thief gets round to using it.
2.Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
Obviously, unless your account details or the thief caught, you will need to seriously consider opening up a new accounts. You will also need to acquire fresh credit and ATM cards. You should have your request placed in writing. Whilst you undoubtedly will still need to call the companies, writing them a letter will ensure that you and they have a better record of the event. Most credit institutions will request for this anyway.
3. File a report with the correct agencies
Stealing a person’s identity is a serious offense. You should not keep the incidence to yourself. Once you are done protecting yourself, make sure that you file a report of the incidence with the affected agency. A good idea is to file one with the federal trade commission and another with the local police force.
Finally, it is vital that you become more conscious of your security. In most cases of Identity theft, people lose their information not because they were attacked by a world class thief, but because they simply weren’t careful enough.
