The latest innovation in the television market is the 3D TV. In the beginning, their has been the black and white TV. A few years after that, we have seen the color television in every ones home. Most recently, almost every CRT televsion has been replaced with LCD or Plasma TVs that offers far better definition. HDTV or High Definition Televison was big step in the evolution of this little box that is taking more and more place in our lives every day. When HDTV has arrived, all the broadcasters and the film makers had to change their gears to adapt to this new technology.

And now, we will finally be able to experience a three dimensional experience, like in the Imax cinemas, in the confort of our own homes! To watch a 3D movie, you will need to be equiped with a Blu-ray player, a 3dTV and the special 3d glasses that came with your TV. How does it work? The system provides two different high definition pictures at the same time… One for each eyes. The Blu-ray disc is a usefull media to store such movies because a 3d movie takes two times the space that a regular one should take on the disc.

Unlike some other animals, humans have two eyes located just aside of each other on the front of their head’s. This being said, that’s what enables us to have stereoscopic vision. By comparing the images received by each eyes, our brain create the 3d image. The 3d TV has to refresh the image at least 120 times per second to create a good 3d illusion. The glasses also play a very important part of the process…

Each time the image is refreshed in the 3dTV, one of the lens of the special glasses is blocked; so the left eye or the right eye sees only the image that the TV wants it to look at. The glasses are synchronized with the TV via infrared or radio signal depending on the vendor choice of technology. These glasses are called: active-shutter glasses.
